Sunnyside Ladies Newsletter ~ May 2008

Introducing the speaker for the evening: Jo Proctor ....

a vibrant energetic lady from the Hazeltons, who came here thirty-eight years ago on her honeymoon. And did she say the honeymoon never ended!!!!! She is a teacher of English, Home Economics, has a Reading Consultant certificate, was a leader of a young people’s group for many years, the Pathfinders of the SDA church. She married a teacher also, they have three children together and three grandchildren. Her interests are in outreach, reading, people watching, travel, planning activities.

She has an exciting story to tell of her mother who graduated and married at the young age of eighteen. One time her husband put his head out the window and she rolled the window up on his head! Her mom sewed, drycleaned professionally, lived during the war and prohibition and on occasion hitchhiked – as in a 400 mile trek and over a rollercoaster track to another part of town to Chicago, (you will have to talk to Jo to get the story straight).
She brought her children to Sunday School and later on became baptized into the Adventist church in 1958. Her parents also were divorced and remarried. Her mom often sang the favorite hymns and did programs for the folks in nursing homes, writing poetry also. Now Jo’s folks have passed away recently and we are remembering the times together. Jo remembers her mother as a nice lady who taught her to be nice to people and that even though strange things happen GOD still goes with you.

Many of us sitting here in the living room here have parents who are gone now and have memories of them as being a colporter, picking cones, never afraid when they are around, playing mudpies in the woodpile, teaching us how to cook, putting on a tight girdle in those days!!!! One even said the older she got the more she realized how smart her mother is. The other does not have bonding memories as her mom passed away when she was a young child. The memory will always be of a mom who was kind and loving....so here as we celebrate mothers on this day are a few poems pictures etc...

Jo and Laura got together and found a couple poems that is the heart cry for every parent…….

A Mother’s Prayer
By Calvin Hart

Warm as sunshine, sweet as honey,
Filled with love and care,
Tears of joy, tears of pain,
Describes a mother's prayer.
A plea for mercy, a cry for help,
A thanks for blessings received,
A prayer for a guiding hand,
For those we have conceived.
A prayer of joyous elation,
For the gift of a small precious life,
A prayer of suffering and sorrow,
For the accompanying pain and strife.
A mother's prayer is honest,
With devotion, so strong and sincere,
Borne on the wings of the angels,
Out to Father's listening ear.
Tears of joy at a new baby's birth,
Tears of joy at watching them grow,
Tears of worry, that never will cease,
When into the world they go.
Flesh of my flesh, blood of my blood,
My life's greatest joy and pain,
Who brings the sunshine to my life,
As well as the dark clouds of rain.
Few others petitions, that rise up to Heaven,
Can even come close to compare,
To the strength of love, and intensity,
That is found in a mother's prayer.
Fear not mothers, for your prayers are heard,
And are precious in God's Holy sight,
Find comfort in knowing,
He stands by your side,
And His wisdom is just, and right.
Be honored mothers, and continue to pray,
For yours is a special place,
Chosen to be the creators of life,
By God, in His wisdom and grace.

Mothers of Today

Somebody’s Mother
Author unknown

The woman was old and ragged and gray
And bent with the chill of the winter's day.
The street was wet with the recent snow,
And the woman's feet were aged and slow.
She stood at the crossing and waited long,
Alone, uncared for, amid the throng
Of human beings who passed her by,
Nor heeded the glance of her anxious eye.
Down the street with laughter and shout,
Glad in the freedom of "school let out,"
Came the boys like a flock of sheep,
Hailing the snow piled white and deep.
Past the woman so old and gray
Hastened the children on their way,
Nor offered a helping hand to her,
So meek, so timid, afraid to stir,
Lest the carriage wheels or the horses' feet
Should crowd her down in the slippery street.
At last came one of the merry troop,
The gayest laddie of all the group;
He paused beside her and whispered low,
"I'll help you across if you wish to go."
Her aged hand on his strong young arm
She place, and so, without hurt or harm,
He guided her trembling feet along,
Proud that his own were firm and strong.
Then back again to his friends he went,
His young heart happy and well content.
"She's somebody's mother, boys, you know,
For all she's aged and poor and slow;
"And I hope some fellow will lend a hand
To help my mother, you understand,
If ever she's poor and old and gray,
When her own dear boy is far away."
And "somebody's mother" bowed low her head
In her home that night, and the prayer she said
Was, "God be kind to the noble boy
Who is somebody's son and pride and joy."

Notes from others: Your poem, “Somebody’s Mother”, is a poem that my Mother liked to read to an audience for Mother’s day. I have heard her do that many times.

Enjoyed the newsletter so much. Just thought, "Keep on the Sunnyside" would be a great theme song for the church there.
Have to pick up the grandkids & take them to St. Paul this morning & then bring Brianne back tomorrow after her trip to the orthodontist. I keep busy & seems like there is still something for me to do yet. Thanks for the prayers. I can use all I can get. Will see you in August. P

Mother's Story

Mother's Day was created in 1908 by a West Virginian, Anna Jarvis, who sought to create a holiday where all mothers would be remembered. Her own mother died early in May 1905. After trying to erect a memorial plaque honoring her mother at their church, Jarvis decided to pursue the creation of a national holiday honoring all mothers. She was successful, and the holiday was declared by Calvin Coolidge in 1914.

The floral and greeting card industries were quick to jump on the commercialization of the holiday, something that Jarvis strongly resented for the rest of her life. She said greeting cards "were a poor excuse for the letter you are too lazy to write." Her campaign to decommercialize the holiday she founded was unsuccessful as illustrated by the holiday today.

After 21 years of marriage, my wife wanted me to take another woman out to dinner or refreshment. She said, "I love you, but I know this other woman loves you and would love to spend some time with you." The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my MOTHER, who has been a widow for 19 years, but the demands of my work and my three children had made it possible to visit her only occasionally.

That night, I called to invite her to go out for dinner. "What's wrong, are you well?" she asked.

I thought that it would be pleasant to spend some time with you, I responded. "Just the two of us,"

She thought about it for a moment, and then said, "I would like that very much."

That Friday after work, as I drove over to pick her up I was a bit nervous. When I arrived at her house, I noticed that she, too, seemed to be nervous about our date. She waited in the door with her coat on. She had curled her hair and was wearing the dress that she had worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary. She smiled from a face that was as radiant as an angel's.

"I told my friends that I was going to go out with my son, and they were impressed," she said, as she got into the car. "They can't wait to hear about our meeting." We went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was very nice and cozy.

My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady. After we sat down, I had to read the menu. Her eyes could only read large print. Half way through the entries, I lifted my eyes and saw Mom sitting there staring at me. A nostalgic smile was on her lips. It was I who used to have to read the menu when you were small, she said.

Then it's time that you relax and let me return the favor, I responded.

During the dinner, we had an agreeable conversation - nothing extraordinary but catching up on recent events of each other's life. As we arrived at her house later, she said, "I'll go out with you again, but only if you let me invite you." I agreed.

How was your dinner date? asked my wife when I got home. "Very nice! Much more so than I could have imagined," I answered.

A few days later, my mother died of a massive heart attack. I could not do anything for her. Some time later, I received an envelope with a copy of a restaurant receipt from the same place mother and I had dined. An attached note said: "I paid this bill in advance. I wasn't sure that I could be there; but nevertheless, I paid for two plates one for you and the other for your wife. You will never know what that night meant for me. I love you, son."

At that moment, I understood the importance of saying in time: "I LOVE YOU" and to give our loved ones the time that they deserve.

Give them the time they deserve, because these things cannot be put off till. "some other time."

Treasure Gift Exchange

Earlier last week I had asked that we were going to have a treasure/gift/stuff exchange and to gather their treasures they might think someone else would like AND YOU DID A VERY GOOD JOB! I wanted to ask if it was hard for you to sort out the things to give away. For most of you it was not hard but for me it was because I like to hang on to all my little trinkets. But as I did not want to appear selfish or hoarding things someone else might like, I found there were quite a few things to give away after all. Bonnie phoned later to say how much her daughter even appreciated some of the things. So- someone’s ‘garbage’ is another’s treasure.. We had fun seeing what was in the packages.
“Christ asks us to give not from our surplus but even the little that we have- give all that we have – is true compassion.”

These are things and more to share with you not just what happened in our get- to-gether but some things I thought you might be interested in. Next time you might want to gather some things to share in the next issue.
We did a lot of sharing and you were so thankful that we talked enough and no time for crafts. I am sorry Ladies for the crafts hahha , but we will keep it on hold for when there is nothing to talk about. When will that be???????
Here is a crafty thing for you to get your husbands or the neighbor to help you with ……….see you get it anyway……….!!!!

Food and Things

We had some left over and as usual we always find someone to give it to. Donnie and Carl were working hard on their house so that is where it went.

I loved the picture of them with their eyes closed. Everyone got a long stem rose to take home and of course they had to pose for pictures. Even Laura got in the picture mode!!! They all smelled their flower and hummed an angel chorus song. It was so pretty!!!! Sorry the video did not turn out. For a special dessert I thought I would be conservative and make cupcakes with a little whipped cream and fruit. There must have been an unseen hand or something or just maybe cupcakes were to be seen and not eaten!!! Because the roses fell on them and they got water logged on the bottom. Some of you ate the top anyway!!! Then two or three of them happened to fall on the carpet even though you tried hard to hang on to them. Then after you all left the garbage fell over with the scrapped pieces of cake in it. I also found a bit of whipped cream way up o the shelf inside the cupboard. Very strange and funny……

Cat Story and Goodbys

And now, your heartwarming Mother's Day story

A highly accomplished mom we know sends along this tale:

Jack was a great cat, and the kids would carry him around and sit on him, and nothing ever bothered him. He used to hang out and nap all day long on this mat in our bathroom.

Well, we have three kids, and at the time of this story they were 4 years old, 3 years old and 1 year old. The middle one is Eli. Eli really loves Chapstick, LOVES it. He kept asking to use my Chapstick and then losing it. So finally one day I showed him where in the bathroom I keep my Chapstick and how he could use it whenever he wanted to, but he needed to put it right back in the drawer when he was done.

Last year on Mother's Day, we were having the typical rush around and trying to get ready for church with everyone crying and carrying on. My two boys are fighting over the toy in the cereal box. I am trying to nurse my little one at the same time I am putting on my make-up. Everything is a mess, and everyone has long forgotten that this is a wonderful day to honor me and the amazing job that is motherhood.

We finally have the older one and the baby loaded in the car and I am looking for Eli. I have searched everywhere and I finally round the corner to go into the bathroom. And there was Eli. He was applying my Chapstick very carefully to Jack's... rear end.

Eli looked right into my eyes and said "chapped." Now, if you have a cat, you know that he is right -- their little butts do look pretty chapped. And frankly, Jack didn't seem to mind.

And the only question to really ask at that point was whether it was the FIRST time Eli had done that to the cat's behind, or the hundredth.

And THAT is my favorite Mother's Day moment ever, because it reminds us that no matter how hard we try to civilize these glorious little creatures, there will always be that day when you realize they've been using your Chapstick on the cat's butt.

Well mothers day is all about celebrating for one day and then getting ready for the next year of cooking cleaning learning about your grown children’s welfare and the neighbors too, and perhaps baking a loaf of bread to give to them also. Mothers are constantly washing clothes and trying to keep up with the folding and ironing. Some now-a-days even hang their sheets out on the line. What a wonderful fresh small and crisp feeling for crawling into a cool bed in the middle of a hot summer night. So there are a few recipes that we could always use and new ones to try out on a hungry husband or other family member.............

Getting ready to go. I shall take Florence home and you will take Laura and Ruth will go with Jo and we will remember each other in our prayers. Goodby Cupcake and Thank you for coming All…… We had a good time
